DWC SUMMER SALAD
RECIPE DWC
serves over 150 nutritious and delicious lunches each day to the
women of Skid Row. Here is one of our favorite recipes.
Mango Salad with
Homemade Dressing by Carrie, DWC Participant
1/2 head of lettuce 1 tomato, cut into wedges 1 handful of mushrooms, sliced 1 small handful of croutons 1 tablespoon chopped cilantro 1 mango, julienned
Dressing: ˝ Cup olive oil 1 Cup Balsamic vinegar 1 Tablespoon sugar 2 Teaspoons salt
Wash lettuce and cut into bite-sized
pieces. Wash and slice all vegetables as indicated above. Mound
lettuce on plate and arrange vegetables around lettuce. Place mango
slices on top of lettuce and garnish with cilantro. For dressing,
combine all ingredients with a whisk or fork. Drizzle dressing over
plate or serve on the side. Serves 2-3 as a side dish.
“I
like the idea of fruits and salad mixed together. The original
recipe came from a magazine, I just put my own spin to it.”
Participant Carrie began exploring
her culinary talents through DWC’s Workforce Development Program and
the Culinary Arts training . Through these programs, she realized
her passion for cooking and enrolled in L.A. Trade Tech’s Culinary
Arts program and hopes to one day open up her own restaurant!
DONATING YOUR OLD VEHICLE
IS EASY & MAKES A REAL DIFFERENCE TO DWC
DWC is now partnering with CARS
(Charitable Auto Resources, Inc.) to turn donated motor vehicles
into charitable income to directly support our programs and
services. It is a great way to support the cause you love and get a
deduction on your taxes!
Pictured above is Jeri O'Donnell, who recently donated her used van to DWC.
Thank you, Jeri!

Annual Preservation Awards for commitment to restoration,
rehabilitation, and adaptive reuse. A former shoe factory, the
Center is now a beacon of hope on Skid Row providing 71 units of
permanent housing to formerly homeless women along with supportive
services to more than 5000 women per year.
Congresswoman Roybal-Allard Visits DWC: DWC was happy to welcome Congresswoman Lucille Roybal-Allard to the
Center. In addition to touring the Residence, the Congresswoman and
her staff met with our Case Management team to connect them with
services to better support the women who visit our Day Center. We
greatly appreciate the Congresswoman’s continued support.
LEED Certification: Downtown Women’s Center is a proud recipient of a Silver LEED
certification. LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environment Design) is
the internationally recognized system for measuring a building’s
sustainability or “greenness.” One of DWC’s core values is
sustainability, and we are proud to reflect this in our new home.
