"Solutions Exist" to
Women's Homelessness
Yes, we can end homelessness! In 2007, DWC embarked on a
journey with
UCLA’s Center for Community Partnerships and UCLA in LA to create
Solutions Exist,
a civic education project to empower communities with the tools to end
women’s homelessness. The program – a workshop series that is now fully
implemented and making great progress – allows participants to explore
their ideas and misconceptions about homelessness in a structured, safe
space. Through discussion and hands-on activities, participants learn
about the social issues that contribute to homelessness and that the
permanent supportive housing model can solve this crisis. DWC is now
reaching out to high schools and civic organizations throughout Los
Angeles to host workshops that spread the message. Innovative yet
practical,
Solutions Exist
has
allowed DWC to introduce ourselves to a number of individuals and groups
as a leader in new methods of community building, and we will continue
to provide our audiences with the resources needed to make a difference.
DWC would like to thank the community groups that contributed to the
development of
Solutions Exist,
including UCLA’s Center for Community Partnerships, Professor Jacqueline
Leavitt of the UCLA School of Public Affairs, Educational Consultant
Susan Serrano, Los Angeles Community Action Network, Downtown Women’s
Action Coalition, and the multiple high schools that have been involved
in piloting this program. If you would like to be trained as a
Solutions Exist
volunteer or would like to receive a presentation at your organization,
please contact Community Outreach Assistant Steven Alvarez
at StevenA@DWCweb.org or (213) 680-0600.
