Help End Homelessness for Women

Downtown Women's Needs Assessment DWC, with the Downtown Women’s Action Coalition, conducted a Needs
Assessment of women living in Skid Row. Following are a few key findings:
-
More women are experiencing
longer periods of homelessness.
40%
stated they were homeless for five years or more.
-
This population faces aging and end
of life issues. Nearly half are 51 years and older.
-
Over half had slept on the streets,
in an abandoned building, a vehicle, or a park.
-
Permanent, affordable housing was seen as a top need by a
majority of women surveyed.

SOLUTIONS EXIST
to
Women's Homelessness
Yes, we can end homelessness! Solutions Exist,
a civic education project to empower communities with the tools to end
women’s homelessness. This workshop series allows participants to explore
their ideas and misconceptions about homelessness in a structured, safe
space. Through discussion and hands-on activities, participants learn
about the social issues that contribute to homelessness and that the
permanent supportive housing model can solve this crisis. DWC is now
reaching out to high schools and civic organizations throughout Los
Angeles to host workshops that spread the message.

Downtown Women's
Action Coalition
The dramatic increase of women and families living in Central City East,
combined with the threats to women and children’s health and safety in
the area and the shortage of housing and services, led to the formation
of the
Downtown Women’s Action Coalition (DWAC)
in April 2001.
Our mission is to empower women who live and work downtown to influence
public policy change that promotes health, safety, and economic and
social justice for women through collective action, public education,
community building, advocacy and leadership opportunities. Click
