Charity Navigator Review of DWC

New Program is Helping DWC Participants Get S.E.T. to Succeed!

“I feel ready to go!” said Downtown Women’s Center Resident Maria T. after the S.E.T. (Skills Enhancement Training) to Succeed Career Fair on March 13. Maria is planning to apply for a position as a Tour Guide as part of DWC’s newest workforce training program.

S.E.T. to Succeed provides opportunities for women to

learn new skills, enhance existing skills, receive vocational

training, and contribute to DWC operations. In exchange for time dedicated, participants earn rewards, with the more time contributed, the higher the value of goods received. The program will further the educational and skill-building services currently offered at the Center, and it will soon become part of a continuum of workforce development programs. Our continued effort to meet each woman where she is provides

opportunities for women who are preparing to reenter the workforce, and it is this individualized attention that we expect will make the program successful.

The Career Fair offered an opportunity for participants to learn about the positions available and apply for positions such as Phone Clerk, Learning Center Assistant, Kitchen Assistant, and Tour Guide. Our hope is that by creating a formalized role for the women, they will be able to build on these efforts to gain real world skills and further enjoy the sense of pride and purpose that results from a hard day’s work. Maria hopes that will be the case too, and is really looking forward to improving her public relations skills.
